Michter’s traces its roots back to 1753, making it one of the oldest whiskey brands in the United States. Originally founded by Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk in Pennsylvania, the distillery produced rye whiskey long before bourbon became America’s sweetheart.
The brand name “Michter’s” emerged much later, in the 1950s, as a combination of the names of then-owner Lou Forman’s sons: Michael and Peter. Despite its historic legacy, the original distillery closed in 1989. But in the early 2000s, the brand was resurrected in Kentucky by a new team with a vision to produce whiskey of uncompromising quality.
Today, Michter’s is known for its small-batch production, meticulous attention to detail, and aging process that includes heat-cycled warehouses and barrels toasted before charring. Its lineup includes Straight Rye, US*1 Bourbon, Sour Mash, and limited-release expressions like the 10-Year and 20-Year offerings.
